Ffestiniog Railway Sentry Box Brake Van Kit

Price range: £54.95 through £61.95

These brake vans were built at Boston Lodge for the start of passenger services in 1865. Three were built and were used with the 4-wheel Birmingham carriages. Shortly after being built, they were modified to include a “Sentry Box” to accommodate the guard on the balcony. This kit is for a van with the Sentry Box. If you are looking for a van without the Sentry Box, have a look at our Early Brake Van kit.

They were only used for about a decade before the bogie brake vans (Curly Roof Vans) replaced them in 1873 and they were eventually scrapped.

This kit closely resembles the vehicles after they were modified to include the Sentry Box, although similar to the current replica (Van 3), there are differences in the couplings and the shape of the headstock. The replica contains vacuum braking equipment, whilst the original vans did not.

Description

The kit compromises of laser cut plywood components and 3D printed detailing parts.

Each part of the kit has been produced by a process that is optimised for that part.

The dimensions below are all maximum dimensions, so over couplings for the length and over any detailing parts on the outside for the width. The height is from the top of the rail.

Length – 180mm
Width – 105mm
Height – 120mm
Gauge – 32mm.

The kit contains everything you need to build the van, including our detailed and illustrated instructions. The only thing the kit does not contain is any paints and adhesives.

As with all of our kits, this has been designed to be a straight forward kit to build, perfect for beginners. It can be built and assembled as supplied to be a great representation of one of the brake vans, or it can be “super-detailed” to add even more realism to your model!

Decals for the van are available at Endon Valley Custom Decals.

Additional information about this van can be found on the Festipedia site here.

Images of the van can be found on the Ffestiniog Railway Heritage Group’s Ibase website.

The demonstration model is painted in L&Y Purple-Brown, with a coat of Rustoleum Gloss Clear Coat. The roof is painted with Rustoleum Gunmetal spray paint.
