**PRE-ORDER** NWNGR Cleminson Carriage – All Third

£119.95

This carriage was one of three delivered to the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway in 1877, built by the Gloucester Wagon Company Ltd.  The carriages used James Cleminson’s patented flexible wheelbase system, which meant that rather than using two bogies for running gear, they had three wheelsets. The center wheelset slid from side to side, and the end wheelsets pivoted to match the curvature of the track, influenced by the position of the center wheelset. Three similar carriages were built, two of which were braked vehicles and the last one was a all third. This kit represents the all third version. It is difficult to pin down the exact numbers these carriages carried, but it is thought that the all third carriage was numbered 8 and 11 for the majority of its existence.

By the time the WHR was formed, the Cleminson carriages were either scrapped or out of use. Half of one of the carriages, it is unknown which one, was used in Dinas yard as a shed until at least 1934, before eventually being scrapped. None of these vehicles survive today.

Description

The kit compromises of laser cut plywood parts for the main body and a set of 3D printed frames to produce the Cleminson system. Additional detailing is achieved by resin printed parts. The running gear is Binnie NWNGR wheels, with steel axles, brass bearings and a set of our resin printed NWNGR Chopper Style buffer couplings.

Each part of the kit has been produced by a process that is optimised for that part.

The dimensions below are all maximum dimensions, so over couplings for the length and over any detailing parts on the outside for the width. The height is from the top of the rail.

Length – 500mm
Width – 111mm
Height – 140mm
Coupling Height – 25mm
Gauge – 32mm

The kit contains everything you need to build the carriage, including our detailed and illustrated instructions. The only thing the kit does not contain is any paints and adhesives.

As with all of our kits, this has been designed to be a straight forward kit to build. It can be built and assembled as supplied to be a great representation of the NWNGR Cleminson third class carriage, or it can be “super-detailed” to add even more realism to your model.

Decals for these kits can be purchased from Endon Valley Custom Decals.

Additional information about these carriages can be found on the Festipedia site here. There are a few images of the carriage in use, mostly in trains and there is a highly detailed makers photograph. The kit represents the carriage shortly after delivery to the NWNGR.

The photographs of the carriage can be found on the Ffestiniog Railway Heritage Group’s Ibase website.

Another great resource of information about theses vehicles are the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway’s heritage journal “Welsh Highland Heritage”.

The demonstration model is stained with Blackfriar’s Golden Teak Exterior Woodstain, with a coat of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Clear Coat. The interior is painted with Rustin’s County Cream Gloss paint.
