Ffestiniog Railway Flour Van 78 Kit

Price range: £39.95 through £46.95

This van was converted from a 4 Ton Open Goods Wagon without raising the sides, like the other van conversions. It was used to transport flour from the mill at Snowdon Street to the bakery next to Penrhyn Station. The dimensions for this kit were taken from the surviving 4 Ton open goods wagon, with the roof designed to suit the wagon. The wagon first appeared in photographs in the 1930s, it’s exact build date is unknown. It laid derelict in Glan y Mor yard during closure and was presumably one of the wooden wagons that was burnt and scrapped during the early years of preservation. It is not known what number this wagon carried, although the only known good image of the wagon (ibase 5279) suggests it was either 78 or 79. The wooden bolster wagons have a gap in the numbering sequence between 77 and 80, which suggests that those numbers were used on other vehicles.

Description

The kit compromises of laser cut plywood parts for the main body and the frames are a FDM 3D Print.

Additional detailing is achieved by FDM printed detailing parts. The running gear is standard Binnie wheels, with steel axles and a set of our custom CNC machined brass bearings.

Each part of the kit has been produced by a process that is optimised for that part.

The dimensions below are all maximum dimensions, so over couplings for the length and over any detailing parts on the outside for the width. The height is from the top of the rail, to the highest part of the vehicle.

Length – 192mm
Width – 83mm
Height – 115mm
Coupling Height – 25mm
Gauge – 32mm

The kit contains everything you need to build the van, including our detailed and illustrated instructions. The only thing the kit does not contain is any paints and adhesives.

As with all of our kits, this has been designed to be a straight forward kit to build, perfect for beginners. It can be built and assembled as supplied to be a great representation of the FR flour van, or it can be “super-detailed” to add even more realism to your model.

Decals for this wagon can be obtained from Endon Valley Custom Decals here.

Wagon number plates for this wagon can be obtained from Coast Line Models here.

Although not much information survives regarding this particular van, information on other vans and the flour traffic on the Ffestiniog Railway can be found on the Festipedia site here.

The demonstration model is painted in Rustoleum’s Red Oxide primer, with a coat of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Clear Coat. The roof is painted with Tetrion Satin Black Paint. (There are additional details such as a longitudinal beading and a side brace to add to the demonstration model.)
