Ffestiniog Railway Oyster Wagon 27 Kit

Price range: £27.95 through £34.95

During the slate quarrying boom in Blaenau Ffestiniog, one of the cheapest, protein rich food which was available to the quarrymen were oysters, harvested from the beds off of the Welsh coastline. As such, they were often transported from the harbour at Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog and the other towns and villages along the line. These drop-side wagons were used to transport the oysters in either sacks, crates or barrels.

Description

The kit compromises of laser cut plywood parts for the main body and the frames are a FDM 3D Print.

Additional detailing is achieved by resin printed detailing parts. The running gear is standard Binnie wheels, with steel axles and a set of our custom CNC machined brass bearings. There is also the option to upgrade to our CNC machined steel wheels.

Each part of the kit has been produced by a process that is optimised for that part.

The dimensions below are all maximum dimensions, so over couplings for the length and over any detailing parts on the outside for the width. The height is from the top of the rail, to the highest part of the vehicle.

Length – 143mm
Width – 80mm
Height – 62mm
Coupling Height – 25mm
Gauge – 32mm

The kit contains everything you need to build the Oyster Wagon, including our detailed and illustrated instructions. The only thing the kit does not contain is any paints and adhesives.

As with all of our kits, this has been designed to be a straight forward kit to build, perfect for beginners. It can be built and assembled as supplied to be a great representation of the Oyster Wagon, or it can be “super-detailed” to add even more realism to your model.

Information about this wagon and similar vehicles can be found on the Festipedia site here.

Images of the van can be found on the Ffestiniog Railway Heritage Group’s Ibase website.

The demonstration model is painted in Rustoleum Red Oxide primer, with a coat of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Clear Coat.

Decals for this wagon are available at Endon Valley Custom Decals.
